WRITE TO THE PREMIER AND THE MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT:

To the Premier and Minister,

I wish to draw your attention to alarming footage of Forestry contractors abusing members of the community captured on a Mistake State Forest access road on Monday morning.

Nobody deserves to be attacked in this way, least of all by government contractors. Nor should it be up to passionate members of the community to stand up for our precious native forests that you have already publicly promised to protect.

You need to stop logging in the area identified as the Great Koala National Park. Your Government has already committed to an $80 million investment to create the GKNP, allowing the Forestry Corporation to continue to log it while studies and consultations are underway is not tenable. Your lack of sensible action is causing harm in our communities.  This recent footage shows that logging contractors are acting as if they are protected by dangerous impunity. They put our forests and community at risk.

The trees at risk in Mistake State Forest are essential habitat and some are hundreds of years old. They provide crucial habitat for koalas, greater gliders, glossy black cockatoos, the forest owls and other threatened species that call the forest home. They literally hold the land together, with deep, old roots that cling to the terrain and help ensure the flow of clean and abundant drinking water.

Native forest logging is a big driver of the extinction crisis here in NSW. So many of our forest-dependent animals are in serious trouble as they slide down the threatened species list too close to extinction. Native forest logging is destroying critical koala habitat. Before the 2019/20 wildfires, koala populations had declined by 50% over 20 years. They are expected to be extinct by 2050, yet the Forestry Corporation is still logging their habitat. Logging also makes forests more vulnerable to wildfires and interrupts the hydrological cycle, reducing water yields.

Let’s work together to protect and begin the regeneration of these precious life-giving environments for the future. We must follow in the footsteps of Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland to protect native forests, mitigate climate change, protect our threatened species and improve our economy.

A moratorium on logging in what will become the GKNP will help protect our precious public forests and our local communities who love them.

In an unbelievable spray caught on film near Mistake State Forest, government contractors have verbally abused members of the public, calling environmentalists “germs”, “scum” and “a lazy f***ing pack of c****s.”

Communities from across the state celebrated when the new Labor Government committed to create the Great Koala National Park. But this is the reality, the Government is endorsing Forestry Corporation logging the area three times faster than the rest of the state and abusing anyone who stands in their way.

This hypocrisy has reached breaking point. Logging is destroying these forests and pushing koalas and other forest dependent threatened species to extinction, while the community fight for the national park that they were promised. It is environmentally reckless and a wanton waste of public money.

WRITE TO THE PREMIER AND THE MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: Forestry Corp is out of control. It’s time to honour your promise and end logging in the Great Koala National Park for good.
