Protest is a fundamental human right and an essential pillar of a healthy democracy - but in New South Wales, our right to protest is under attack from an increasingly authoritarian Minns Labor Government.
The heinous police violence we saw against peaceful protestors at Town Hall, Sydney must not go unchecked and must never happen again.
A lawful and peaceful public assembly was made violent by the actions of NSW Police. This was the inevitable outcome of Labor Premier Chris Minns’ continuous attacks on protest - he created a pressure cooker designed to cause conflict.
This isn’t democracy - it’s what happens in a police state, the infliction of corporal punishment against a peaceful community who are exercising their right to express their political views.
A system of government where one political leader can control where you can and can’t protest, and what you can and can’t say, is not a democracy - it’s an authoritarian regime.
So much of what we love, and even take for granted, about our society was won through protest - workers rights, women’s rights, First Nations rights, marriage equality and of course the protection of nature, our forests and the places we love. Protests bring attention to Israel’s horrific genocide in Gaza that our governments ignore. When our right to protest is threatened, so is our ability to make change.
NSW Labor needs to know that the community opposed their countless attempts to stop peaceful protests. Send Labor Premier Chris Minns an email today.
