We need accountability after forestry assaults

Call on the Premier to keep logging companies accountable for unlawful actions

Dear Premier and Minister,
 
I have just seen the Sydney Morning Herald article and video that shows a violent assault by loggers against members of the public in a public forest. I am deeply concerned about the type of culture that would allow employees of a private company to feel empowered to attack people in a public space.
 
The two men that have been found guilty of assault were, at the time, employed by logging company Greensill Bros that was contracted by the NSW Forestry Corporation, a State Owned Corporation over which you have responsibility. I understand that the assaults were also recorded on a mobile camera by a Forestry Corporation Officer. 
 
The video evidence of the incident is confronting and unambiguous. Two members of the community, acting in a friendly and non-threatening manner on a public road in a public forest, are approached by two aggressive and hostile forestry contractors who then perpetrated acts of violence against them, demanded their personal property and shouted threatening abuse at them. A NSW Forestry Corporation employee captured the whole incident on video and did not once seek to call a stop to the violence. 
 
The Forestry Contractors showed no remorse and in fact pleaded not guilty. The two victims of the assault have suffered immensely as a result of the trauma inflicted upon them both. There has been no public apology from Greensill Bros, and there has been no offer of support for the victims of the assaults.
 
The forest in question is also the subject of an assessment for inclusion in a Great Koala National Park. The fact that logging is ongoing in this forest, despite consideration for inclusion in a National Park, is deeply distressing. The current logging is still being conducted by Greensill Bros and there is no indication that they have done anything to resolve cultural issues in their company that allowed these assaults to occur.
  
I request that you instruct the NSW Forestry Corporation to immediately suspend all contracts with the logging company Greensill Bros. We must make it clear that private companies operating in public forests and contracted by a State Owned Corporation will be held to account when their employees commit acts of violence against members of the community.

Government contractors for the Forestry Corporation have assaulted members of the public in a state forest, we need to call them to account and end ongoing contracts.

Employees of Mid-North Coast logging company Greensill Bros assaulted 2 members of the public in 2020, but there have been zero consequences for the company that allowed these assaults to happen.

There has been no support offered by Greensill Bros to the victims of the assault, and they continue to receive public funds to log public forests without taking any action to ensure other members of the public will not be assaulted in the future.

We need the Premier to act and to end all contracts with Greensill Bros!
