Boycott Cellebrite

Dear Premier and Ministers, 
I am writing to ask you to ensure that all NSW Government agencies end their affiliation with Israeli spyware firm Cellebrite.

I am particularly concerned by the NSW Police Force’s use of Universal Forensic Extraction Device Technology (UFED), as well as a recent request from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for a quote to use Cellebrite technology.

Cellebrite has well-documented affiliations with the Israeli Defence Force and Unit 8200, Israel’s military intelligence and cyberwarfare unit. Cellebrite has made public its support for Israel’s genocidal military actions in Gaza, and has assisted Israel in hacking phones seized from Palestinians in the illegally occupied West Bank - conduct the International Court of Justice has found to be unlawful. Furthermore, human rights experts have raised that Cellebrite products have been used to persecute oppressed peoples in Bahrain, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Jordan.

Cellebrite’s standard licence agreement permits Cellebrite to access and intercept communications and to access, modify, collect, record, disclose or transfer personal data on any device.

If such terms have been replicated in the licence agreement or contract between Cellebrite and NSW Police, it would pose serious risk to the integrity of digital evidence and the right to privacy in NSW.

I urge you to immediately publicly clarify whether such terms exist within the licence agreement between Cellebrite and the NSW Police.

I also note evidence given to Israeli newspaper Haaretz which states ‘as a former Cellebrite employee, I can say from personal experience that the company does nothing to prevent the abuse of its products by customers. It knowingly sells products and services to users of dubious repute, belonging to autocratic regimes.” I respectfully contend that a corporation described in this way should not play a role in the administration of law enforcement in New South Wales.

I understand the Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs has moved away from the use of Cellebrite products. I respectfully request that the NSW Government does the same, given the severe concerns around civil liberties, intelligence capability and human rights.

The NSW Police have an agreement with Israeli spyware firm Cellebrite which allows them to download every single thing on your phone and store it forever.

Every message you’ve ever sent. Every photo you’ve ever taken. Every search you’ve ever made. Whether you’ve deleted them or not.

Your location every time you opened your phone. Which Bluetooth devices you’ve connected to. Every single one of your contacts. Every entry in your calendar. And more.

Cellebrite is an Israeli corporation closely affiliated with the genocidal Israeli military and is accused of assisting Israel to illegally occupy the West Bank. Cellebrite has been accused of data and privacy breaches.

Cellebrite’s licence agreement with other government agencies allows them to remotely access, alter and store data - but the Minns Labor Government refuses to release the licence agreement between Cellebrite and NSW Police.

Currently, police can only use this technology with your consent, or if you’re suspected of a serious offence. And they can’t force you to unlock your phone without a warrant - but Labor Premier Chris Minns wants to remove this requirement.

Take action today and demand that Labor Premier Chris Minns upholds our right to privacy, and that the Minns Labor Government ends all affiliation with Cellebrite now.
