Dear Minister, 
Like many of us, in the coming days I’ll be calling loved ones who I can’t be with in person.
I was alarmed when, in June, you increased the cost of inmate phone calls by more than 10 times. Regular contact with friends and family is a person in custody’s best chance at getting their life back on track when they leave custody. 
Inmates are becoming more and more isolated and families who are already struggling to survive are being forced to pay 10 times as much money to Corrective Services just to have regular contact with their loved one inside. 
I am calling on you to remove the cost of phone calls for inmates, to make phone calls free and readily available so that cost is not a barrier to connection. 
Minister, inmates across NSW suffer under appalling conditions. Your own department admitted that some correctional centres are Victorian Era, human rights are being violated and we are failing to meet our international obligations under the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture to which Australia is a signatory. 
I am calling on you to take one small, but very significant step toward fixing this broken system.
