The climate crisis is upon us and the future of our planet as we know it is hanging in the balance.
The Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO’s State of the Climate 2024 Report has confirmed we’ve hit 1.51 degrees of warming and we know the impacts have begun. More extreme heat events over land and oceans, longer fire seasons, more intense heavy rainfall and sea level rise.
The severity of the impacts we face depends 100% on how fast we reduce and draw down dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. But the NSW Government is just not doing enough. They are allowing new coal and gas, they’re still logging our precious native forests and they’re unconscionably exporting the climate crisis out of the Newcastle Coal Port like there is no tomorrow.
That’s why we must push the NSW Labor Government to declare a Climate Emergency now, before it is too late!
The politics of climate action can feel impossible and the US election result is a serious backward step for global action against climate breakdown. But when our planet and everything we know and love is under attack, we know what to do. We stand up and we fight back. We must now fight like never before to ensure global temperatures do not climb any higher.
Together, let’s tell NSW Labor that we are determined, we are resolute and we want more climate action. Let’s push the Government to join the thousands of other jurisdictions who have declared a Climate Emergency.
A Climate Emergency declaration would pave the way for further and faster action on climate, to reduce and draw down dangerous greenhouse gases and to do everything we must as the emergency demands, to secure a livable planet.
In Australia, over 100 jurisdictions, representing 9 million people, that’s over a third of the population have declared a climate emergency, including South Australia and the ACT. Around the world, 2,364 jurisdictions in 40 countries have declared a climate emergency. This amounts to over 1 billion citizens.
It’s a global emergency and it’s escalating, and the NSW Labor Government must start acting like it. The NSW Government must stand loud on the side of science and the community.
By declaring a Climate Emergency we can make sure our Government begins to go further and faster in the face of climate breakdown and to prepare our communities from the damaging effects that have already taken hold. With a state-wide Climate Emergency Declaration there can be no excuse for Government inaction.
Every bit of pressure matters. Start by sending this email telling the NSW Government that we need them to go further and faster on climate action now.
