The devastating 2025 floods on the Mid North Coast have once again pushed our regional NSW communities into crisis. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed, crops and stock lost, roads smashed, businesses  destroyed, lives changed forever and rivers scoured and in parts in a state of collapse. We are watching the terrifying impacts of the climate crisis, once again, in real time.

The peer-reviewed attribution report released by ClimaMeter, as the floods were going on, demonstrates that the intensity of the floods were a direct result of human induced climate change. The fact that the NSW Government approved the extension of a large coal mine during these climate fuelled floods, is a reckless act of harm against all communities living on the front lines of the climate crisis.

This isn’t a one-off disaster. It follows the catastrophic 2022 Northern Rivers floods, the Black Summer fires, and years of worsening drought. These compounding disasters are no longer rare - they’re becoming the new normal.

The science is clear: warming oceans fuel more extreme weather. Sea surface temperatures off the NSW coast have consistently been above average, reaching levels that make storms more intense and more destructive.

Meanwhile, the NSW Government is unbelievably still approving new coal and gas projects. These are the same fossil fuels that are driving global heating and locking in future devastation.

We need our government to stop gambling with lives and futures. It’s time to act.
