Kathleen Folbigg has been offered "go away" money from Labor Premier Chris Minns and Attorney General Michael Daley.
It's a slap in the face that reeks of misogyny and compounds injustice.
$2m barely covers what Kathleen could have earned on a full-time salary over 20 years. Kathleen has not only lost 20 years of wages, she has lost her four children, her home and her employability. She has racked up costs fighting her wrongful conviction, she has lost her superannuation, and she has been the victim of one of the worst injustices in this state’s history - wrongful imprisonment.
A man who was imprisoned wrongly for 19 years got $7 million in compensation, and that was years ago. There's a double standard towards women from Premier Chris Minns and AG Michael Daley.
Ex-gratia payments are payments of grace and good will, but what the Minns Labor Government have done is offered a disgraceful payment in bad faith.
The Premier has now said Kathleen should sue the Government if she wants to access what she ought to have been offered. It’s hard to imagine a more callous, ignorant and stupid response. The Premier needs to turn this around and sit down with Kathleen Folbigg and discuss a genuine outcome in the name of justice.
Ex-gratia payments shouldn't be determined in smoky back rooms or on the back of envelopes - they should be subject to an independent financial process, that is done publicly and with transparency.
While this is about Kathleen Folbigg, it is also about all women and our justice system. We can not let this compounding miscarriage of justice continue.
We demand that the Premier sits down with Kathleen and treats female victims with the respect they deserve.
