Protest is a fundamental human right and an essential pillar of democracy.
After the Supreme Court ruled that parts of the Minns Government’s Places of Worship laws were unconstitutional, the Premier has announced plans to introduce new public-order and protest laws. Instead of recognising this as a warning against government overreach, the Minns Government is doubling down.
History teaches us that when governments respond to social tension or the rise of extremist groups with authoritarian restrictions, it does not curb fascism or hatred. Suppressing democratic rights in the name of combating extremism has never worked - and will make things far worse.
Hundreds of thousands of people defied Labor Premier Chris Minns during the March for Humanity across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to express their outrage at Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
But now, the Zionist Lobby and the Liberal Nationals are demanding even further crackdowns on peaceful protestors.
Labor Premier Chris Minns relied on false data and conspiracies to rush through his draconian anti-protest laws earlier this year. These laws handed police excessive powers that are already being used by police and courts to restrict peaceful protest. Now, instead of stepping back, Labor is preparing a fresh round of laws that risk pushing NSW even further towards authoritarianism.
The good news is that more Labor MPs than ever before are calling for a rethink of the Premier’s anti-protest agenda.
Hundreds of thousands of people have mobilised and shown this Government that the community will not accept attacks on our right to speak out. We must keep the pressure up so we can continue to protest for people and the planet.
That’s why the Greens have introduced laws in both houses of NSW Parliament to repeal these draconian anti-protest laws and restore the democratic freedoms that every society depends on.
Send an email to every Labor MP now demanding they repeal the anti-protest laws.
