Labor is taking us backwards on climate. Proposed laws set to be debated in the NSW Parliament in the coming weeks will delay reaching net zero emissions until 2050 and the impacts will be disastrous.
We have heard compelling evidence in an inquiry into Labor’s laws from leading climate scientists, law experts and economists that we must go further and faster and net zero legislation must have targets that are binding and in line with the science. Labor’s proposed climate laws have neither.
The Greens will use our numbers in the Parliament to fight for real climate action based on science and survival. We have told Labor what it would take for us to support their laws. This includes:
- 75% emissions reductions by 2030
- Net zero by 2035
- Targets must be binding
- Net Zero Commission be given the power to consider coal and gas projects and be free from fossil fuel industry interests
