Dear Ms Beattie, 
Please find my submission to the Future of Gas Statement. 
I am very concerned with the overreliance on gas proposed within the Future of Gas Statement and I completely reject any prospect of hydraulic fracturing in New South Wales. It is not the right direction for NSW right now, and will interfere with the renewables energy transition of the State . 
I oppose the plans for coal seam gas exploration and exploitation in the Pilliga, the Liverpool Plains and Western NSW. 
Community, Unions, the Gomeroi and farmers oppose the plans for gas in the Pilliga, and the associated pipelines and proposed expansion on to the Liverpool Plains. The clear and consistent position of Gomeroi people is that Narrabri Gas should not proceed. Narrabri Gas in all likelihood will be too expensive for NSW manufacturers that need gas below $10/GJ. It is now also the case that the proponent of the Pilliga CSG project has made a financial decision to deprioritise this gas project.
Gas demand reduction must be prioritised over expanded gas drilling that carries major risks for land, water and the climate.
New gas exploration, production and processing is incompatible with the NSW’s legislated climate targets, including its legally binding net zero by 2050 target.  
It was a shock to me when the NSW Labor Government recently announced that it would allow gas exploration in Western NSW, offering a 98% reduction on licence fees to gas corporations and then not ruling out fracking. I am so disappointed that any Government would think this is a responsible position in 2026. This should be reversed and at a minimum all fracking ruled out. 
The statement needs to take into account the federal gas reservation policy which is currently being designed, and seeks to address artificial gas shortfalls on the east coast by forcing gas exporters to supply the domestic market. 
Thanks to renewable energy and batteries, the role of gas in the grid is shrinking every year and with proactive switching, there is no need to develop new gasfields in NSW. Hydraulic fracturing in particular poses an acute risk to human health, water security, food security and the environment.

In the middle of a climate and energy crisis, the Minns Labor Government wants to open up NSW for gas drilling and hasn’t ruled out fracking in the Great Artesian Basin - our greatest freshwater supply. They’ve even bowed to the gas lobby and given climate-wrecking gas corporations a 98% discount on exploration license costs - reducing them from $50,000 to $1,000!

The climate science is clear - no more gas. Expanding gas will jeopardise our ability to meet our legislated emissions reduction targets and our international obligations. Now is the time to get off dirty fossil fuels and invest in renewable energy, which we know is cleaner, cheaper and more reliable.

In 2021, even the Liberal-National Coalition Government ruled out gas drilling in Western NSW, because they knew how controversial it is. The Minns Labor Government now risks a gas policy that is worse than even the Liberals and Nationals.

Fracking is one of the most damaging and polluting gas mining processes. It would allow our freshwater to be poisoned and drained, and it would significantly threaten farmers.

We can’t let NSW Labor frack our fresh water, or open up our State to gas drilling.

Make a submission to the Minns Labor Government’s so-called Future of Gas Statement and demand the Minns Labor Government rule out fracking.
