The climate crisis is not coming, it’s here and affecting every region on Earth. Communities in the Northern Hemisphere are sweltering under unprecedented temperatures, sea surface temperatures are at record highs and floods and fires are ravaging landscapes across the globe. Here in NSW we lived it in our last fires and floods, my home of Lismore was changed forever with so many still suffering.

If we are going to survive this we need real climate action now.

I am deeply worried that the Labor Government here in NSW isn’t getting it. We have no plan on the table to stop fuelling the climate crisis, reduce our emissions and draw down carbon. In fact they are still approving new coal and gas, feeding enormous amounts of coal through the world’s largest coal port, talking about delaying the planned closures of our coal fired power plants and logging our precious native forests.

Labor took to the election a policy of legislating net zero by 2050 and 50% reduction in emissions on 2005 levels by 2030. The Coalition was committed to cut emissions by 70% by 2035.

Net zero promises by a date too late and no road map is not real action and will not cut it.

It’s time to ramp up the pressure for our survival. We urgently need a commitment and a clear roadmap to net zero emissions by 2035.

We’re calling on the NSW Government to do the things we know we can and must do:

  • End coal and gas by 2030
  • End public native forest logging immediately
  • Regenerate and Reforest our landscapes
  • Build the protected area network to 30% of NSW by 2030
  • Roadmap to net zero by 2035
